Start your first protocol with the Protocol Designer or the Python API.

There are essentially two options for writing a protocol for the OT-2:

  1. Protocol Designer ➡️ basic workflows, no coding required

  2. Python API ➡️ unlimited control and customization, Python proficiency required

Note: At this time, Protocol Designer does not export Python code that you can customize. Similarly, you also cannot import Python in Protocol Designer.

Protocol Designer is the best option for users with basic workflows.

The Python API is best if you are highly proficient in Python and want to write your own workflows. If you are less comfortable with Python and have found a workflow beyond the scope of Protocol Designer, you can request for Opentrons to write a custom protocol for you.
