We haven't taken any in-depth power consumption measurements, and the exact numbers will depend heavily on your protocol, anyway. If you need to know the true power consumption of your system, you can use an electricity monitor while your protocol is being run.
Estimated power consumptions
Total power consumption depends on the specifics of the protocols run on the robot. In general, the OT-2 consumes around 15 W when idle. When running a protocol, power consumption may range from around 75 W to around 155 W. It depends on how much of the protocol is spent moving or pipetting, and how much of it is spent dwelling.
Temperature Module (GEN1 and GEN2)
The Temperature Module can consume close to its maximum power, around 180 W, when heating or cooling close to its maximum temperature limit. Protocols that involve temperatures closer to ambient will consume less power.
Magnetic Module (GEN1 and GEN2)
The Magnetic Module will consume a small amount of power while idle: around 10 W or less. Consumption may briefly increase to around 60 W while the motor is actively moving inside the device to engage or disengage the magnets.
Thermocycler Module (GEN1)
The Thermocycler will draw around 500 W when ramping through cycles with large temperature changes.
Uninterruptible power supply recommendations
In case your building's power fails, an uninterruptible power supply can keep your OT-2 and hardware modules running for a little while.
We haven't tested any uninterruptible power supplies, so we can't currently offer an official recommendation.
We suggest using an uninterruptible power supply selector tool. Plug in your combined worst-case power load and run time, and check what size of uninterruptible power supply the tool suggests.
